FAQ's - FOAM PADDING
INDUSTRIAL GRADE "SHOCK-ABSORBING" FOAM SAFETY PADDING
Foam corner guard strips protect people from hazardous and dangerous corners and edges.

What is "Skin Urethane"? (Visit link)
Skin Urethane is a special molded foam material which has :
● shock absorbing "inner" foam,
● thick outer “skin” to protect from abrasion, UV rays, moisture and bacteria

Polyurethane is a completely self-skinning polymer that is stain-resistant, puncture-resistant and remarkably easy to clean
It resists staining caused by grease, chemicals, waste products, and other liquids, and can be cleaned as easily as a countertop. Polyurethane is naturally antibacterial/antimicrobial and odor-resistant, making it ideal for clean room environments.

Each piece is produced one at a time in mold. Each shape has it's own custom mold.

This product is NOT an extrusion (ie pushed thrrough a die and run thousands of feet at a time and then cut to length)

How does Boing's safety padding compare with competitors?
There are “corner” guard products available.
● some are made of metal or hard plastic - BUT ....no shock absorbing value
● some are made of extruded foam
- limited shock absorbing value
- limited anti-abrasion properties
- no protective skin - the foam shreds quickly
- no or limited UV protection
- are generally available only in neutral colors like Gray, Ivory, Brown ....no bright colors
- not designed for heavy duty use

Where and when can you use Boing safety padding?
Our safety padding is used anywhere to "protect people" from sharp/dangerous edges, corner, surfaces:
● All types of recreational play areas (indoor & outdoor)
● Manufacturing and commercial facilities
● Logistics and transportation facilities and equipment
● Military facilities, vehicles and equipment
● Medical and educational facilities
● Residential

How do you attach?
See Installation Instructions for the various possible solution to meet your specific need.

Product does NOT come with peel-stick tape.

Many factors beyond Boing Safety's control and uniquely within user’s knowledge and control can affect the use and performance of an adhesive or mechanical solution to a particular application. Given the variety of factors that can affect the use and performance of products, the user is solely responsible for evaluating the solutions offered and determining whether it is fit for a particular purpose and suitable for user’s method of application. We can only give you recommendations as to what we have tested and used.

Silicone - For most general installations, use “GE-Silicone I or II" or 2X. Most customers have had good successl.

Instant Adhesive - for attaching smaller pieces like the Mini corners & strips or where you need a very high level of bonding, use an instant adhesive. You can purchase small quantities (4gm) such as Loctite Superglue. We also sell larger quantity bottles (28gm and 56gm).

Velcro - for those locations where you need to remove to get access to equipment etc. You must use a "Super Glue" type adhesive to attach the Velcro to the Boing safety padding. The peel/stick adhesive backing on Velcro does NOT create a good bond on the Boing safety padding.

Do not use GOOP, Liquid Nails etc as they will NOT create a good bond on the Boing safety padding.

Aluminum re-inforced strips can be attached with screws (strips are pre-drilled & we provide the screws)

How much silicone do you need?
If you use the silicone method, the amount will vary with the type of surface to be protected and the degree of adhesion. As a rough estimate, you can generally attach the following numbers with a single 300ml tube:
Wall Pad - 2 to 3 pieces;
Corner Strip - 6 to 8 pieces;
Jumbo Corner Guard - 12 to 14 pieces;

In what shapes is the safety padding available?
● Corner strips - designed for all types of structures/equipment.
- also great for “square posts”
● Jumbo 3-D and 2-D Corner Guards - for all dangerous or sharp 3-sided corners
● Wall Padding - designed to be used on any hard/solid wall surface (Sheetrock, brick, wood, etc)
● SlimV or Slim C - to fit on different shapes like corners or tubes
● Flat Pad - can be cut into smaller sections - use anywhere you need protection

If you do not see it on our website, we do not have it. Your option is to consider "custom" manufacturing .... but that is a major investment.

Is Skin Urethane safe?
Boing can be used in commercial and residential environments. It has passed or surpassed a variety of safety requirements including Compression, Toxicity etc. Safety testing documentation available upon request. It has anti-bacterial properties and passes ASTM G21 testing for a variety of bacteria.

Our skin Urethane products do NOT contain PVC, lead or phthalates.

Is Skin Urethane fireproof?
Boing Safety has not tested all products regarding fire and smoke retardants to meet Class A fire codes. There are many, many different local, national and international fire codes, each with different property requirements. It is not possible to have one set of fire/smoke retardantst that meets the various fire codes for all possible applications.

Customer must weigh the benefit of the Skin Urethane shock-absorbing safety padding and the many injuries it can prevent versus meeting fire codes for your specific application.

Is Skin Urethane long lasting?
It will last many, many years if used in the manner it was designed as shock absorbing safety padding. However, durability is relative to the amount and type of use. Longevity will be reduced by excessive or aggressive use. It is impossible for us to advise customers on "longevity" as there are thousands of different applications and different environments.

What is the Skin Urethane's size tolerance?
Skin urethane is produced in a mold - one piece at a time. The "baking" forces can be affected by temperature and humidity which will vary by season and weather variations. The result is that there can be up to a 5% variation in the size and density of the finished product. This is not an extruded product.

Can the safety padding be used outside?
It can be used indoors or outdoors. All plastic products, even those that are UV treated, will eventually fade in the sun. The stronger the sun, the faster it fades. The darker the initial color, the stronger it fades. In addition the impact absorbing characteristics are reduced in very cold (below 32F) and very hot (over 100 F) weather. These factors will vary from region to region.

Please note that the 4 primary colors (Red, Blue, Green, Yellow) have better UV resistance than the other colors.

It is best if the product is not exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods.

How do you remove the silicone?
Silicone can be removed by scraping with a blade or craft knife, but that can be laborious and isn't always practical.  Instead, try using a solvent that's made to remove silicone.

There are a number of solvents on the market, but one of the best is Silicone-Be-Gone, a product made by DAP and developed specifically for removing silicone.  It can be used both for dissolving cured silicone and for cleaning up the area around freshly applied silicone.  The product takes several hours to work completely. It's also an oil-based solvent that has a noticeable odor, so use with proper ventilation.  It's also a good idea to wear gloves to minimize contact with your skin.

Go to the DAP site to check on locations (Lowes, Ace Hardware etc)

If you don't want to use the stronger commercial products, you can remove silicone with products like Krud Kutter, mineral spirits or rubbing alcohol.  These products are safer, but they will take longer to work, and they will likely also require some elbow grease and a fair amount of scraping.

In what colors is the safety padding available?
Currently available in up to 10 vibrant colors - depending on the shape.
- Not all items are available in the full color range. We only carrry the most popular colors.
- We can have it made for you in a custom color based on minimum quantities per shape ($$$)

Can you paint Skin Urethane products?
We do not offer "painting" products or services.

There are some "water-based" urethane paints to which you add color pigment. You can try, for example SC115 aliphatic polyurethane coating. May require SC-80 water based primer. There is also a solvent based SC89 flexible urethane coating but it requires excellent ventillation and proper protective mask. Due to the complexity of the product, variable sizes etc, we do not get involved in the sale of such products.See www.burmanfoam.com

How do you clean and maintain the safety padding?
See separate page on "Cleaning". If possible, do not use solvents such as methylene chloride, acetone, laquer thinner, Benzene, Toluene, Xylene etc. Do not clean polyurethane with acids.

Can you use around water activities?
Yes - the product is waterproof (if not cut or punctured). You must fasten to a clean and dry surface. See installations instructions - including using a water seal. With extended exposure to chlorinated water, there may be some surface discoloration (greenish) and even more so near water with high TDS (Totally Dissolved Solids). There have not been any specific tests to determine the amount of discoloration, based on the concentration of chlorine (& TDS) over extended periods of time.

We have yet to find the perfect adhesive that will adhere the urethane to various surfaces in an aquatic environment.

It safe to use around acids?
In general terms, polyurethane can be used around most industrial acids. The most common industrial acids are hydrochloric and sulfuric. The affect of acid on polyurethane will depend on concentartion of the acid, the time and conditions of exposure, and the type/density of the urethane foam padding. Do not clean polyurethane with acids.

We recommend tha the user test the specific acid on a small sample piece first. Use all necessary precautions when working with or around acids.

If the quantities justify the cost of offering better resistance to strong acids and chemicals, we can develop formulations for specific applications.

Can Skin Urethane padding be used on the floor or under playground equipment?
The current shapes we offer are not designed for flooring use. The Wall Guards can be placed on the floor - but are not rated for ASTM 1292 - Safety Surfacing for Flooing.
